nebulaIs The Universe a Hologram? Physicists say it’s possible.  I’ve always been fascinated by the multitude of theories that proliferate in the scientific community that try to explain the nature of the universe, and even more controversially,  its origins.  Now, I have my own opinions on the matter, but since they’re rather controversial and that’s not what I want my blog to be about, I’m not going to go into them.  Suffice to say, I’m a Christian, and many of my beliefs stem from there.

No, here I want to look at articles and theories like the ones from the article linked above from a perspective totally different from what’s “right.”  Instead I want to regard it from a position of awe.  Let’s face it: we don’t have any solid idea what the universe really is or how it works.  It’s possible we’re not even capable, as human beings, of full comprehending it.  But every time I see science advancing (or at least expanding) in this area of research, I’m drawn in, fascinated and inspired.

What I find interesting about the article is that they touch on the idea that the universe is a hologram (and how it could explain so much about science if it is), but they don’t reflect on what that would mean.  So if it’s a hologram, WHY is it a hologram?  Was it designed to be that way?  Is it just that way through some fluke of the universe?  HOW is it a hologram?

This is why I keep tabs on science news.  How amazing is this world we live in?  What amazingly inventive idea will we come up with next?  And how might our world surprise us by (at least seemingly) verifying some of the most bizarre of them?

So the universe is a hologram.  What happens if someone turns it off? :P

Land of the Giant Mushrooms

According to science news, Long Before Trees Overtook the Land, Earth Was Covered by Giant Mushrooms.

So like the Shivering Isles?

mushroom, oblivion

Elder Scrolls IV’s Shivering Isles. Giant mushrooms and crazy starscapes ftw.

Honestly, after reading the article, I had a hilarious mental picture of a bunch of bespectacled men in labcoats hucking grocery-store mushrooms at each other while they argued whether a fungus, lichen, or other similar organism could grow to 8 meters.  It’s a valid question, but imagining a reasoned debate around a microscope was too tame.  (Although I suppose if the thing’s 8 meters the microscope wouldn’t always be necessary.  Stereotypes ftw!)

Seriously though, I love it when scientific data leads people to painting pictures of what the planet looked like before we started writing things down.  Barring time travel, we have no way of knowing – and that’s awesome.

My Inspiration: Mercedes Lackey

All writers are readers; it just goes with the territory. And I have been reading for as long as I can remember. When I first started learning to read, I devoured everything in site. It didn’t take long before my reading level was far beyond what my age suggested it should be. In fact, I remember reading books with sex scenes (not like erotica, but still) before I really understood what was going on. I just went flip, flip, flip- oh good, we’re back to the story. My voracious reading continued until university, when unfortunately my reading lists took over and I didn’t read much for pleasure anymore. Even so, I expanded my mind in new ways, with different kinds of reading and learning.

But for me, the most memorable author is Mercedes Lackey with her Valdemar series. I started with Arrows of the Queen and I was completely enchanted by her characters and her world. Who wouldn’t want an amazing animal companion of human intellect who loves you to the depth of your being. I have to admit, those Companions were a big draw for me, but so was her character-focused writing in those early books. Alberich is still my favorite character of… yes, I think ANY book, ever. His book, Exile’s Honor, came a little later in the series, but it has become my favorite by far. And it wasn’t just the characters – Mercedes Lackey has built an incredibly vivid, magical world for her characters to live in. Everything from the geography and the mix of cultures and races, to the carefully crafted system of magic, to the unique creatures that roam her world, all work to draw the reader in.

I have to admit though, I am a far greater fan of her earlier works that her more recent ones. But such is life – things change, and her writing has changed. She has expanded in new directions while I remain curled up, snuggling her old books, much beloved. Of all the authors that I’ve read, she has probably had the greatest impact on my own writing. She has an immersive, straight-forward style that discards fluff in favor of moving things along. Her imagery is vivid without taking 6 pages to describe something (I’m looking at you, Tolkien). She has her flaws, sure, but I recommend her books to anyone who loves fantasy. Start with Arrows of the Queen, like I did – it was her first book and one of her best, in my mind. Maybe you’ll fall in love with her characters and her world like I did.

Sons of Gallifrey

So we’re excited after the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, The Day of the Doctor, and looking forward to the Christmas episode and the coming of the new Doctor.  But now there’s this too…

Those of us who love Doctor Who tend to REALLY love Doctor Who. Just look at the fan following. I mean, I think most actors like the shows they act in, but look at what a bunch of the cast and crew of Doctor Who have made:

It’s a teaser of a show they’re pitching to BBC, a spin-off of Doctor Who. I, for one, think that more Doctor Who is a good thing, so I wish them luck. (That was very calmly stated. Inside, I’m making high-pitched sounds of excitement.)

Redeeming the Doctah

I must say, after having just watched the latest episode of Doctor Who, I am SUPER excited for the next season (and the Christmas episode, of course).

I LOVED the redemption of the Doctor.  I love the darkness in the show, but what I love most in the light – the joy, the awe, and the hope that the show inspires.  Redeeming the “lost” Doctor – and thus the following ones – really spoke to me.

But onto the guts of it…

So we’re pretty sure that Gallifrey is returning – it’s just a matter of when.  I, for one, love this.  I’m hoping they don’t go super political with it, but I don’t think they will.  I’m just stoked for the massive number of possibilities that absolutely proliferated with that plot twist.  The new characters and new challenges – there’s so much awesome stuff that can happen!  Sometimes it seems like the Doctor is a little overpowered for his universe – bringing the TimeLords back is an excellent check and balance to that.  I’m hoping to see both new allies and enemies of the TimeLord variety though – what kinds of things could we learn about the TimeLords with a new TimeLord ally?

I just hope that they don’t take TOO long to bring Gallifrey back.  The way they set it up in The Day of the Doctor, they could draw it out and not have The Doctor find Home and bring it back for awhile – I don’t think they’d stretch it past a season, but I’m hoping it’ll be within a few episodes.  But we’ll see, I guess, and this impatient fangirl will have to wait (and not just for that plot development, but for any Doctor Who at all… Christmas seems so far away…)

Anyways, I seem to have gotten a little long-winded, so I’ll leave ‘er there.

How about you guys?  Are you stoked for more Doctor Who?  What in particular are you hoping to see?

P.S. I’m excited for the new Doctor too!

Reality is stealing my ideas!

The mind of a writer works in weird and wonderful (but mostly just weird) ways. It’s not necessarily better, just frequently different. And it’s not that I believe mine (in particular) is entirely original either. Even so, it’s always a little eerie to come up with an idea for a story (wink wink), and then stumble across a story in the news or life that reveals how that “different” idea may come to pass in the not so distant future…

I speak of stumbling across these videos:
Computer Chips In Your Brain
Connecting The Mind To The Internet
(Sorry they’re links and not embedded. They were not embed friendly.)

But like I said, it’s not like I thought these were original ideas… I just didn’t think they were quite this close to becoming reality…

Fascinating stuff in science, guys. Where will we go next? I’m stoked to find out.
