Borrow a Kitten – Library Card Required.

First, let me apologize for missing my Thursday post last week. I admit that I totally forgot. But I think it’s understandable, as my boyfriend proposed on Thursday! We are now ecstatically engaged and looking forward to our lives together. :D

And no, we’re not going to have an alpaca witness our wedding.

And since I’m in a particularly lovey-dovey mood, allow me to introduce: THE KITTEN LIBRARY!

Las Cruces, New Mexico, has a “library” where you can “check out” a kitten for a day. At the Dona Ana County office building, workers can pet and play with kittens in need of homes. Not-so-coincidentally, many of those kittens end up going home (and staying!) too.

kitten adorable love me take me home

Credited with a brief loss of productivity but a spike in job satisfaction and stress-reduction, I think a cat library is a brilliant idea. We should install one on every corner.

It’s great for the cats, too. Just think of all the kitties who have found new homes! Before you know it, kittens will be like Pringles – you can’t have just one.

Supporting fewer strays and more kitten cuddles, we need more kitten libraries!

What about you, dear readers? Do you advocate a kitten library in your hometown?

What Ray Guns And Cats Have In Common

IFLS just did an article on some new, science fiction-y technology headed out way. Some scientists have invented a “small handheld ultrasonic emitter that accelerates tissue repair…healing times could be reduced by 30%. This both increases comfort for the patient and shortens how long the wound is susceptible to infection.”

ray gun healing medical technology

Probably not what it looks like.

This is way cool. IFLS compares the invention to Star Trek’s medical ray gun, although of course that instrument provides instantaneous healing (methinks we’re a ways off from that yet). Essentially, this device reinvigorates cells and “jump starts” the healing process. As the article explains, “[t]he ultrasound device works by inducing nano-vibrations in the membranes and surrounding environments of skin cells.” The scientists are very optimistic about various uses for ultrasound technology in the future.

There was an interesting tie-in when IFLS asked (and partially answered) Why Do Cats Purr?

“Vibrations in the body have been shown to promote healing.

This raises the fascinating possibility that purring is actually a way for cats to heal themselves. While ultrasound has been shown to accelerate skin healing, and high frequency vibration training increases muscle power, some suggest that a cat’s purring can help to increase its bone density. This would fit the idea that athletes have denser bones on average as a result of vibrations when their feet hit the floor during exercise.

With such sedentary life styles, it might actually make sense that cats would need to increase healing and bone density while effectively lounging around for most of the day. It would also explain why cats purr when sick or injured.”

So it looks like cats are one step ahead of us. Also, apparently purring is a superpower. It would certainly be an interesting superpower. Someone needs to write this superpower into a book! Wait! I know a writer!

And, just because, here’s a nine hour video of a cat purring:

For your health! You’re welcome.

What We Can Learn From Cats

Sometimes it can seem like life’s problems are overwhelming. They’re insurmountable. The whole world is going to Hell in a handbasket, and there’s nothing we can do.

In those moments, we need to take a lesson from cats.

Any cat will take the silliest thing – a piece of string, a fluttering leaf, or even a figment of imagination – and make it the most incredible thing.

This cat has turned a bed sheet into a jungle gym:

Life isn’t just what happens to us – it’s what we make of it. So next time you feel overwhelmed, find something to get excited about: something little, something inconsequential. With just a little imagination and a little silliness…life can look a whole lot brighter.

When a small Japanese train station had its last human employee laid off in 2006, a cat was appointed as stationmaster. Tama, a friendly, patient calico cat, would greet customers arriving at the station. In Japan, cats are considered symbols of good fortune, and Tama certainly brought great fortune to the train company. Revenue came pouring in as Tama became a sensation, and people flocked to see the only feline stationmaster in Japan (and, let’s face it, probably the world).

Sadly, Tama passed away last week at 16 (quite old in cat years). A shrine has been erected to honor her, and in the Shinto religion, Tama has been elevated to the position of goddess.

In what will no doubt become tradition, a second calico cat is training to be their new stationmaster.

Remove Cat Before Flight

So somehow this stunt-kitty evaded the pre-flight checks and went for a wild ride…in an airplane. About 30 seconds into the video, the kitty appears from inside the wing to meow in distress at the two oblivious humans. 30 seconds later the pilot notices the cat (and his expression is priceless), but the passenger doesn’t see kitty for over a minute.

Thankfully, kitty survives this harrowing experience without any physical damage. But maybe he’ll learn not to hide inside airplanes anymore.

Now, we all know that the only thing standing between cats and world domination is the lack of opposable thumbs.

But what here’s an even more frightening thought: what if they don’t need even that?
Lion Learns To Open Car Doors

Nevermind computer overlords. Cats are the true kings (and queens) of the jungle… urban or otherwise?

This is proof that it’s only a matter of time, my friends. It’s only a matter of time.

Need to De-Stress? Sit in a Box.

At least, it works for kitties.

This IFLS article asks, Why Do Cats Love Boxes So Much? Well, someone did a study. No, really.

As it turns out, hiding in boxes reduces stress and anxiety in new cats in animal shelters.

Now it was a small study, but are we really surprised? If you were suddenly stuffed into a prison full of strangers, wouldn’t you rather have some kind of divider between you and the rest of the world to help control interaction with said strangers? Well, this study confirmed this for cats too. In the study, some new cats got boxes, some didn’t. Surprise, surprise, the “boxed” cats were less stressed out about their new surroundings.

I imagine play time was more fun too.

Pew pew!

What the study doesn’t explain is the cat trap concept.

It even works on big kitties.

Jaguar in a box

I imagine there’s a reasonable explanation. So dear readers, why do you think cats like boxes so much?
