So we’re excited after the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, The Day of the Doctor, and looking forward to the Christmas episode and the coming of the new Doctor.  But now there’s this too…

Those of us who love Doctor Who tend to REALLY love Doctor Who. Just look at the fan following. I mean, I think most actors like the shows they act in, but look at what a bunch of the cast and crew of Doctor Who have made:

It’s a teaser of a show they’re pitching to BBC, a spin-off of Doctor Who. I, for one, think that more Doctor Who is a good thing, so I wish them luck. (That was very calmly stated. Inside, I’m making high-pitched sounds of excitement.)

Redeeming the Doctah

I must say, after having just watched the latest episode of Doctor Who, I am SUPER excited for the next season (and the Christmas episode, of course).

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Stop reading if you don’t want any spoilers as of the 50th Anniversary episode, Day of the Doctor.

******

I LOVED the redemption of the Doctor.  I love the darkness in the show, but what I love most in the light – the joy, the awe, and the hope that the show inspires.  Redeeming the “lost” Doctor – and thus the following ones – really spoke to me.

But onto the guts of it…

So we’re pretty sure that Gallifrey is returning – it’s just a matter of when.  I, for one, love this.  I’m hoping they don’t go super political with it, but I don’t think they will.  I’m just stoked for the massive number of possibilities that absolutely proliferated with that plot twist.  The new characters and new challenges – there’s so much awesome stuff that can happen!  Sometimes it seems like the Doctor is a little overpowered for his universe – bringing the TimeLords back is an excellent check and balance to that.  I’m hoping to see both new allies and enemies of the TimeLord variety though – what kinds of things could we learn about the TimeLords with a new TimeLord ally?

I just hope that they don’t take TOO long to bring Gallifrey back.  The way they set it up in The Day of the Doctor, they could draw it out and not have The Doctor find Home and bring it back for awhile – I don’t think they’d stretch it past a season, but I’m hoping it’ll be within a few episodes.  But we’ll see, I guess, and this impatient fangirl will have to wait (and not just for that plot development, but for any Doctor Who at all… Christmas seems so far away…)

Anyways, I seem to have gotten a little long-winded, so I’ll leave ‘er there.

How about you guys?  Are you stoked for more Doctor Who?  What in particular are you hoping to see?

P.S. I’m excited for the new Doctor too!

Reality is stealing my ideas!

The mind of a writer works in weird and wonderful (but mostly just weird) ways. It’s not necessarily better, just frequently different. And it’s not that I believe mine (in particular) is entirely original either. Even so, it’s always a little eerie to come up with an idea for a story (wink wink), and then stumble across a story in the news or life that reveals how that “different” idea may come to pass in the not so distant future…

I speak of stumbling across these videos:
Computer Chips In Your Brain
Connecting The Mind To The Internet
(Sorry they’re links and not embedded. They were not embed friendly.)

But like I said, it’s not like I thought these were original ideas… I just didn’t think they were quite this close to becoming reality…

Fascinating stuff in science, guys. Where will we go next? I’m stoked to find out.

Updates on life and writing

WOW, has life ever been crazy! It feels great to be busy, but after my little stretch of tedious unemployment, it’s a little tiring. My first week at my new job went great though, and although I know I still have a huge learning curve ahead of me, I’m really looking forward to it. I’m an administrative assistant in an accounting office, so I’ve finally broken out of the retail industry and into something I actually want to do!

In other news, my first novel is off to the editor! I’m very excited, although I know what with scheduling times and holidays and everything, it will be a while before I get it back even from the first pass. Still, progress is being made! Plus, once the first edits are done I’ll be able to get my blurb all refined and everything so I can get into cover creation too. I think I’ve found a good company to do my cover, but I’m still doing research, so we’ll see! I’m hoping to release Book 1 in early 2014, but that’s a tentative estimate only. With my new job, I won’t have the same amount of dedicated time to throw at this project, although obviously I’m still quite driven to get it done!

Just a reminder, in case anyone missed it, my short story is now up, posted for free for all to read! No strings attached! You can also find it (also free) at Smashwords if you prefer downloading it onto your e-reader.

Cheers!

The Frightening Truth About Where Inspiration Comes From.

Bees Underwent Massive Extinctions When Dinosaurs Did. Articles like these are one place where I find inspiration. The title inspires questions – most notably “why?” and “what if…?” It’s just a simple statement, a single fact, but it holds an immense amount of potential. Someone could write an entire book based on that one sentence – fiction OR non-fiction (although that doesn’t mean anyone will). Me, I write fantasy, so I immediately start thinking of supernatural.

Even just putting bees and dinosaurs in the same sentence can inspire something (albeit something B-movie): Beezilla! Half bee, half dinosaur! Tokyo is doomed! Or maybe: Mutant Bees Vs Tyrannosaurus Rex, Battle for Jurassic Earth (Let’s face it, “Jurassic” is a pretty epic-sounding word and would’ve found itself in a movie title some day even if Jurassic Park had never been made.)

Angry Bee

Does he look angry to you? He looks angry to me.

But even a mystery or thriller writer could do something with that idea. Maybe it’s a conspiracy! They could link that fact to something that’s happening now, something no doubt nefarious. Maybe scientists are conducting experiments. Maybe a secret society is engineering the downfall of our countries so they can take over the world – or at least control it.

I’m not saying any of this would be award-winning material (although it could happen), but it would definitely be fun.

So there you have it, folks. For every writer who has ever been asked where their inspiration came from, the answer is going to look something like this. They saw an image. They read a single sentence (or an entire book) on some random subject. They heard a song. Heck, they tasted a particular flavor or felt a particular texture. And when they did, it evoked an emotion. It evoked an idea. It evoked inspiration.

Fortunately, it’s also often better stuff than bees and dinosaurs. Then again, not every bit of inspiration gets written down, and even less of it gets published. So be afraid. Be very afraid. A writer’s mind is a scary place. As Colin Nissan said,

A writer’s brain is full of little gifts, like a piñata at a birthday party. It’s also full of demons, like a piñata at a birthday party in a mental hospital.

So when someone says inspiration just happens, it’s true. It’s wonderful and inexplicable. That’s why it’s inspirational.
