Holy Hand Grenades and Gaudy Gods

They found a holy hand grenade! Crusader-era hand grenade surprises archaeologists
Or at least, it’s a Crusader-era hand grenade (and those were holy wars, right? Riiiiiiight?)

And the Lord spake, saying, “First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

They pulled the artifact out of the sea, and it’s hundreds of years old.
Ancient hand grenade
As it turns out, hand grenades were actually somewhat common in Israel from the 11th to 13th century. Many experts believe these grenades carried a burning, flammable liquid…although other experts disagree, saying these “grenades” were actually perfume bottles. It’s less exciting than a hand grenade, but hey, I’m sure it made the ladies of the time a lot happier.

What do you think, readers? Hand grenade or perfume bottle?

In other historical news: Ultraviolet light reveals how ancient Greek statues really looked
I’ve always been a fan of Greco-Roman artwork. The pale statues and lifelike features have always spoken to me. There’s something magical about them.

Science has gone and ruined it for me. How? It’s gone and revealed that all of this incredible artwork was actually painted in an incredibly tacky fashion.

Tickles the Tacky Archer

(IFLS has a video and a brief explanation on how they discovered this clown-town paint job.)

Really though. I know the Roman satirist Juvenal mocked the Roman populace for being sated by “bread and circuses,” but I didn’t think even their gods would look like they belonged in circuses.

What do you think, readers? Am I an uncouth troglodyte for bearing such a mocking opinion of this disfigurement of art, or do you find them reminiscent of so many childish coloring books now too?

So this is awesome:

Thanks IFLS (“Sea Organ” Makes Haunting Music With Ocean Waves)

This amazing instrument using the natural wind and waves to create music. It was created in an attempt to revitalize the war-ravaged Croatia, to “bring life to the desolate concrete and return the creativity that the destruction of war lost.”

Check out the link above to see the how of its workings, it’s kinda cool. But this is the kind of creativity our world needs more of. It’s a little-known gem of the world, a unique masterpiece meant for beauty and little else.

Music.

One way to do it right:

The truth about Moonlight Sonata:
No Moonlight Sonata because Mozart is dead and we've all heard it a thousand times.

But if the piano plays like this it’s okay:

Media for Stories

At first, I only read words-on-physical-pages books. And I devoured them. From my discovery of them in elementary school until I graduated high school, I would read whole shelves of books without few breaks. I would continuously request books at my school libraries (it’s thanks to me that CNB Middle School has all the Valdemar books).

In university, my reading dropped off drastically under my heavy course load, but I discovered a new form of story-absorption: webcomics. From Grrl Power to Slightly Damned to The Phoenix Requiem to Questionable Content, I devoured them just as I had novels (and that is only a very small sampling. I still read a ridiculous number of webcomics, and I read less than I used to).

Grrl Power halo crazy superpower

Grrl Power

From webcomics, I moved to manga. Full Metal Alchemist and Psyren rocked my world. I read even more manga, later. And, as is natural, manga led to anime. Around the same time, owning my own computer (and not just sharing my parents’, like in highschool), allowed me to delve into the world of TV shows. We didn’t have TV as I was growing up. My parents thought it was largely a waste of time (and I largely agree), but there was and are some incredible shows out there. Criminal Minds drew me in and held me.

Psyren

Psyren

In short, the medium mattered less than the stories themselves. Each medium allows for different expressions. Manga tell a story very differently than webcomics, as novels tell very different kinds of stories than TV shows. Just look at book-to-movie or manga-to-anime translations. But a good story, and good stories, are good no matter than media.

Of course, we’ll always have favorites: for me, nothing can compare to a good book. But diversity is important too. Each medium is a perspective. We can only benefit from seeing the world through more perspectives.

Epic Origami

I’ve always been fascinated by origami. I mean, you can take a piece of paper – ANY piece of paper – and turn it into a three-dimensional creature solely by folding that piece of paper. How awesome is that? Who came up with that idea? “Gosh, I’m bored and all I have is this piece of paper. I know, I’ll fold it until it looks like a bird.” Really?

Now, I can do a bit of origami myself:

Origami dragon

My origami dragon. Of COURSE I can make a dragon.

origami flower lotus

The most complicated origami I can do. Still amateur level, trust me.

The problem with origami, however, is that it comes in three difficulties: easy, medium, and epically difficult. For example, compare the above to the below:
origami master of awesomeness
Now, I don’t know if this guy follows the “rules” of traditional origami (no cutting, gluing, etc, just folding), but who cares? This is awesome. And I will never be able to create anything close to these even WITH cutting, gluing, etc. Dinosaurs, skeletons, insects (centipedes!), angels, he does it all. Want to see? Check out his Flickr.
Btw, here’s HIS dragon:
origami dragon
My favorite? Probably this one:
origami angel

So readers, have you ever tried origami? Do you just make cranes? (Love cranes. Especially the ones with flapping wings.) Or are you an origami god like this guy? Or would you rather see the fruits of others’ paper-folding labors? Comment!

Well, anyone who follows my blog will know that I LOVE random feats of human creativity. Like these:

violin piano music school

This is a building, people. A music school.

puns jokes humor lol
So you don’t have to tilt your head sideways and squint:
The short fortune teller who escaped from prison was a medium at large.
He often broke into song because he couldn’t find the key.
Local Area Network in Australia: the LAN down under.
The man who fell into an upholstery machine is fully recovered.
When a clock is hungry it goes back four seconds
A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
In democracy, it’s your vote that counts. In feudalism it’s your count that votes.
A backwards poet writes inverse.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
What’s the definition of a will? (It’s a dead giveaway.)
A bicycle can’t stand on it’s on; it’s two-tired.
