I am thrilled to announce that the ducklings are back, and as adorable as ever. There were, in fact, two separate groups. I shall call them the Itsy Bitsy Group and the Fluffily Adorable Group. Both groups were down in the pond and the creek that run near my house. Having seen these precious little babies last year, my fiance and I have been going on walks solely to see them again this year.

We saw the Itsy Bitsy Group first:
itsy bitsy ducklings so squee
They were definitely the younger group, so tiny and squee! But they were a little shy, so this is as close as we could get:
baby birds, water fowl ducks
There’s no feeding the ducks in this area, which I do understand, even if I would love to lure them closer.

On our way back, the trail runs alongside the creek, and we got up-close and personal with some more ducklings! These were far less shy, although they kept a weather eye on us.
mallard ducklings with mama duck
Just floatin'
So cute!

Now we’re just waiting for the quail to hatch their ridiculously tiny offspring. Nothing like some darting, fluffy pinballs to make your day!

So, dear readers, which baby animals do you like to go out and *squee* at?

A little humor to start your long weekend, compliments of Bored Panda: This Seattle Gas Station Has The Funniest Signs Ever

all those who believe in psychokinesis, raise my hand

The past, the present, and the future walk into a bar. It was tense.

Ever stop to think and forget to start again

I child proofed my house but the kids still get in

I checked into the hokey pokey clinic and I turned myself around

How Would You Like To Have A Penguin For A Best Friend?

‘Cause this guy has one. Check it out:

This penguin swims thousands of miles every year to visit the Brazilian man who saved his life. Joao Pereira de Souza found this Magellanic penguin crippled with oil-slicked feathers and close to death near his home. Joao cleaned him up and nursed him back to health. Now the penguin, dubbed JinJing, has adopted him.

“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” de Souza told Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.”

Although it’s not common, penguins do sometimes end up in Brazil after getting sent a little off course by currents. But I’m pretty sure this is the only one trying to replace dogs as man’s best friend.

The Best Mousetrap: 150 Years And Counting

How do you know it’s a good mousetrap? Well, because it’s 150 years old and still working great. Apparently we STILL haven’t built a better mousetrap. IFLS reported.

This is the mousetrap:

Image credit: Museum Of English Rural Life (MERL)

It actually wasn’t intended to catch the mouse. You see, it’s currently in a museum, the Museum of English Rural Life. Turns out that the mouse got in during construction for the redevelopment of the museum. They had other traps set, and yet THIS trap still managed to catch one.

Here is the mouse:

Image credit: Museum Of English Rural Life (MERL)

Poor little guy.

Here’s IFLS’s report:
Staff at the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) opened their emails on Wednesday morning to find a rather odd message from a confused assistant curator, saying: “There appears to be a dead mouse in this mousetrap which is not described as being there on the database.”

Within the 150-year-old mousetrap, the curators did indeed find a fresh dead mouse. The museum has a wealth of textiles, straw and wood in its collection, but the unfortunate rodent happened to cross paths with the “old, not obsolete” mousetrap.

Adding further curiosity to the story, the trap was not baited with anything other than a layer of dust. The mousetrap is able to capture unwitting pests alive with a seesaw mechanism. As the mouse walks along an internal plank, the pest’s weight will tip the seesaw over, leaving it trapped in bottom of the box.

The contraption was patented and manufactured in 1861 by Colin Pullinger & Sons of Silsey, West Sussex. On the side of the box, it accurately boasts: “Perpetual Mouse Trap” and “will last a lifetime.”

But here’s what I think is the best part:

…the mouse remains in the trap while we decide what to do with it. One option is a dignified burial, another is to desiccate it or have it prepared to remain as a permanent feature of the mouse trap for our new displays. We’ll let you know what we decide.

You may have died, little mousey, but you get to become part of history! Yay!

So, readers, are you impressed by the mousetrap? Or just feeling sorry for this unlucky mouse?

Crocodiles Are Awake While Sleeping

IFLS wrote New Study Confirms Ancient Legend About Crocodiles

Essentially, scientists found that crocodiles can remain on watch even while they’re sleeping.

…they are able to undergo what’s known as unihemispheric sleep, where only one side of their brain shuts down for sleep at a time, while the other half remains active. Not only that, but they apparently do so while keeping one eye open to watch out for potential predators… or prey.

People always ask writers, “Where do you get your ideas?” The answer? Everywhere. Especially after reading an article like this. The animal kingdom is full of strange, cool, and sometimes terrifying abilities like this. The trick is farming and combining the bits and pieces into something new to present to the readership.
crocodiles are awake while sleeping
But seriously, how badass is this? It turns out that a bunch of animals can do this, including marine mammals like dolphins and sea lions. Dolphins can actually continue swimming while sleeping.
Check out the article if you want to know how scientists figured it out (it’s interesting).

NaNoWriMo 2015: It begins

02 Monday Nov 2015

Well, I’ve gone and done it. I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year. This is probably unwise, given what a crazy month this November is shaping up to be, but here goes nothing. In all honestly, I’m not really expecting to hit 50,000 words (due to aforementioned craziness), but I haven’t been writing as much as I’d like lately, and this should be good motivation.

For those of you who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. The objective is to write 50,000 words over the course of the month. That’s approximately 1,667 words per day. That’s many more words than most people will write if they don’t love writing. Writing that many words every day for 30 days… Well, you get the idea. If you want to take a go at writing a novel, I highly recommend NaNoWriMo. It’s great fun to have the support of so many people attempting the same thing at the same time.

My NaNoWriMo novel is a WIP: the working title (and maybe final title, I haven’t decided yet) is Claws of the Curse, and this is the first novel I’ve ever written where I’ve actually started with something of an outline. So we’ll see how it goes. Will it be better or worse? It remains to be seen. Regardless, it’s another medieval fantasy novel that I intend to have lots of fun with. :)

So is anyone else out there participating? What’s your project like?
