Cats Are Better Than Dogs

…Or at least we haven’t bred as many deformities into them yet.

Cunning Cats Forced Dogs To Evolve… Or Go Extinct
IFLS wrote the above article, summarizing how when cats came to North America, their superior predatory skills forced the dogs already living there to either adapt and improve or go extinct. Both cats and dogs are powerful predators and exclusive carnivores, so in the wild, they’re in direct competition with one another. Scientists compare this extinction/adaptation result to be on par with what you see from drastic climate changes.

Nature has always done a pretty good job of keeping things balanced. Then, along came humans…
Dogs are their primary victims. I know lots of people like the various breeds, like pugs and bulldogs, but the truth it, they’re being bred into helplessness. We’re exaggerating traits for aesthetic effects (and frequently inbreeding them in the process), and this is having a detrimental effect on their health and well-being. Wanna see the worst of them?

Of course, cats have suffered from our tampering too…
ugly inbred tiger cat

Don’t get me started on those short-legged cats they’ve been breeding… Animals are beautiful the way they are. A little selective breeding is fine (great, even!) but when it causes health problems and other detrimental side effects? I disagree with that path.

Oh yes, and cats rule, dogs drool. ;)

What do you think, readers?

…at detecting cancer, studies suggest.

Cancer-Detecting Dog Trials Approved By The NHS

Studies are suggesting that dogs may be better at detecting cancer than many of the tests we use to screen patients, so now the National Health Service in the UK has authorized dogs to be used in trials to detect prostate cancer.

Ruh-roh!

Humanity is always trying to advance, and it seems like more and more, advancement is only coming when we realize that nature is already doing – and doing well! – what we’re trying to do. We study birds and insects to make better flying machines. And now we’re using animals themselves in medical tests to detect an illness.

I think this is amazing progress. After all, why reinvent the wheel? Additionally, studies have also shown that being around animals can aid healing regardless.

Check out the article for more of the scientific details – as always, IFLS does a wonderful job of breaking it down.

First, let me apologize for missing my Thursday post last week. I admit that I totally forgot. But I think it’s understandable, as my boyfriend proposed on Thursday! We are now ecstatically engaged and looking forward to our lives together. :D

And no, we’re not going to have an alpaca witness our wedding.

And since I’m in a particularly lovey-dovey mood, allow me to introduce: THE KITTEN LIBRARY!

Las Cruces, New Mexico, has a “library” where you can “check out” a kitten for a day. At the Dona Ana County office building, workers can pet and play with kittens in need of homes. Not-so-coincidentally, many of those kittens end up going home (and staying!) too.

kitten adorable love me take me home

Credited with a brief loss of productivity but a spike in job satisfaction and stress-reduction, I think a cat library is a brilliant idea. We should install one on every corner.

It’s great for the cats, too. Just think of all the kitties who have found new homes! Before you know it, kittens will be like Pringles – you can’t have just one.

Supporting fewer strays and more kitten cuddles, we need more kitten libraries!

What about you, dear readers? Do you advocate a kitten library in your hometown?

What We Can Learn From Cats

Sometimes it can seem like life’s problems are overwhelming. They’re insurmountable. The whole world is going to Hell in a handbasket, and there’s nothing we can do.

In those moments, we need to take a lesson from cats.

Any cat will take the silliest thing – a piece of string, a fluttering leaf, or even a figment of imagination – and make it the most incredible thing.

This cat has turned a bed sheet into a jungle gym:

Life isn’t just what happens to us – it’s what we make of it. So next time you feel overwhelmed, find something to get excited about: something little, something inconsequential. With just a little imagination and a little silliness…life can look a whole lot brighter.

When a small Japanese train station had its last human employee laid off in 2006, a cat was appointed as stationmaster. Tama, a friendly, patient calico cat, would greet customers arriving at the station. In Japan, cats are considered symbols of good fortune, and Tama certainly brought great fortune to the train company. Revenue came pouring in as Tama became a sensation, and people flocked to see the only feline stationmaster in Japan (and, let’s face it, probably the world).

Sadly, Tama passed away last week at 16 (quite old in cat years). A shrine has been erected to honor her, and in the Shinto religion, Tama has been elevated to the position of goddess.

In what will no doubt become tradition, a second calico cat is training to be their new stationmaster.

Remove Cat Before Flight

So somehow this stunt-kitty evaded the pre-flight checks and went for a wild ride…in an airplane. About 30 seconds into the video, the kitty appears from inside the wing to meow in distress at the two oblivious humans. 30 seconds later the pilot notices the cat (and his expression is priceless), but the passenger doesn’t see kitty for over a minute.

Thankfully, kitty survives this harrowing experience without any physical damage. But maybe he’ll learn not to hide inside airplanes anymore.

Cats and Dogs and Men and Women

Sometimes I wonder if the relationships between cats and dogs is somewhat analogous to the relationships between men and women. Granted, virtually all men and women have to coexist on a daily basis, so I imagine we (kind of) cooperate more, but at the same time…might there be some truth in that? It’s an amusing thought.

I always imagine men as dogs and women as cats. But how do you see it? Or do you think I’m crazy?
