Happy Canada Day everyone!

I am quite proud to be Canadian; defining Canadian identity might be tough, but it’s a powerful identity nonetheless.

It’s not all Mounties and maple syrup.

When a small Japanese train station had its last human employee laid off in 2006, a cat was appointed as stationmaster. Tama, a friendly, patient calico cat, would greet customers arriving at the station. In Japan, cats are considered symbols of good fortune, and Tama certainly brought great fortune to the train company. Revenue came pouring in as Tama became a sensation, and people flocked to see the only feline stationmaster in Japan (and, let’s face it, probably the world).

Sadly, Tama passed away last week at 16 (quite old in cat years). A shrine has been erected to honor her, and in the Shinto religion, Tama has been elevated to the position of goddess.

In what will no doubt become tradition, a second calico cat is training to be their new stationmaster.

Remove Cat Before Flight

So somehow this stunt-kitty evaded the pre-flight checks and went for a wild ride…in an airplane. About 30 seconds into the video, the kitty appears from inside the wing to meow in distress at the two oblivious humans. 30 seconds later the pilot notices the cat (and his expression is priceless), but the passenger doesn’t see kitty for over a minute.

Thankfully, kitty survives this harrowing experience without any physical damage. But maybe he’ll learn not to hide inside airplanes anymore.

Music.

One way to do it right:

The truth about Moonlight Sonata:
No Moonlight Sonata because Mozart is dead and we've all heard it a thousand times.

But if the piano plays like this it’s okay:

Media for Stories

At first, I only read words-on-physical-pages books. And I devoured them. From my discovery of them in elementary school until I graduated high school, I would read whole shelves of books without few breaks. I would continuously request books at my school libraries (it’s thanks to me that CNB Middle School has all the Valdemar books).

In university, my reading dropped off drastically under my heavy course load, but I discovered a new form of story-absorption: webcomics. From Grrl Power to Slightly Damned to The Phoenix Requiem to Questionable Content, I devoured them just as I had novels (and that is only a very small sampling. I still read a ridiculous number of webcomics, and I read less than I used to).

Grrl Power halo crazy superpower

Grrl Power

From webcomics, I moved to manga. Full Metal Alchemist and Psyren rocked my world. I read even more manga, later. And, as is natural, manga led to anime. Around the same time, owning my own computer (and not just sharing my parents’, like in highschool), allowed me to delve into the world of TV shows. We didn’t have TV as I was growing up. My parents thought it was largely a waste of time (and I largely agree), but there was and are some incredible shows out there. Criminal Minds drew me in and held me.

Psyren

Psyren

In short, the medium mattered less than the stories themselves. Each medium allows for different expressions. Manga tell a story very differently than webcomics, as novels tell very different kinds of stories than TV shows. Just look at book-to-movie or manga-to-anime translations. But a good story, and good stories, are good no matter than media.

Of course, we’ll always have favorites: for me, nothing can compare to a good book. But diversity is important too. Each medium is a perspective. We can only benefit from seeing the world through more perspectives.

World-Ending Lasers On The Horizon

We Could Have Lasers More Powerful Than Exploding Stars In Just 5 Years (IFLS)

Scientists have been playing with lasers again. They’ve figured out how to create matter/antimatter collisions, which sparks bursts of gamma rays.

Yes, you read me right: gamma rays.

Gamma ray bursts are a powerful explosion of energy that are emitted from extremely massive, energetic stellar objects, like black holes or exploding stars.

Hasn’t anyone seen the Hulk? You know, big, green, angry, and unstoppable?

But it gets better.

Perplexingly, no one knows which mechanisms are responsible for GRBs

So we can create these gamma ray bursts, but we don’t know why what we’re doing causes them.

Sounds perfectly safe.

Now, don’t get me wrong, lasers are awesome. I love lasers as much as the next sci-fi fan. But this sounds… unsafe. Since we’re playing with energies in the leagues of “black holes and exploding stars,” maybe we should conduct these studies, you know, off-planet? Or in another galaxy altogether? Just saying.

Then again…

If we don’t pursue science, how will we ever get sharks with lasers on their heads?

Ferry-Goers Get Even

BC Ferries’ Name Contest Backfires

So some genius at BC Ferries decided that it was a good idea to open up the naming of their new ferry to the internet.

Poor, naive soul.

BC Ferry names

BC Ferries are expensive, for those of you who don’t know.

The internet is a cruel – but often hilarious – place.

Add the two together, and you get a list of names that BC Ferries would be unlikely to use. For example:

Spirit of the WalletSucker
Queen of the Overpriced
MV Corporate Pork
Queen of No Other Choice
Queen of the Cash Cow
The Christy Clark Ark
Incompetence Afloat

“S.S. ShouldveBeenABridge” is my personal favorite.

I hope you learned your lesson, BC Ferries. Unless you’re very, very confident in your popularity…don’t ask the internet.
