I seem to recall writing about super-plants taking over the world once before…oh yes, I For One Welcome Our Vegetal Overlords.

So you know, we are bringing our vegetal overlords into being: Scientists Develop World’s First Cyber Plant.

The scientists on this project say:

This technology could allow scientists to regulate growth and chemical processes in plants, as well as harness photosynthesis to create new solar cells.

Oh course, it could also help our vegetal overlords reach new heights. Cyborg humans? Boring. Thing of the past. Cyborg plants? Plague of the future.

Seriously though, the article is cool and you should read it. The possibilities are vast, from learning more about plants and how they work, to turning plants into digital displays.

What do you think, readers? Seriously cool, or seriously another step towards the apocalypse? What’s next in the rise of our vegetal overlords?

IFLS wrote New Study Confirms Ancient Legend About Crocodiles

Essentially, scientists found that crocodiles can remain on watch even while they’re sleeping.

…they are able to undergo what’s known as unihemispheric sleep, where only one side of their brain shuts down for sleep at a time, while the other half remains active. Not only that, but they apparently do so while keeping one eye open to watch out for potential predators… or prey.

People always ask writers, “Where do you get your ideas?” The answer? Everywhere. Especially after reading an article like this. The animal kingdom is full of strange, cool, and sometimes terrifying abilities like this. The trick is farming and combining the bits and pieces into something new to present to the readership.

But seriously, how badass is this? It turns out that a bunch of animals can do this, including marine mammals like dolphins and sea lions. Dolphins can actually continue swimming while sleeping.
Check out the article if you want to know how scientists figured it out (it’s interesting).

…Or at least we haven’t bred as many deformities into them yet.

Cunning Cats Forced Dogs To Evolve… Or Go Extinct
IFLS wrote the above article, summarizing how when cats came to North America, their superior predatory skills forced the dogs already living there to either adapt and improve or go extinct. Both cats and dogs are powerful predators and exclusive carnivores, so in the wild, they’re in direct competition with one another. Scientists compare this extinction/adaptation result to be on par with what you see from drastic climate changes.

Nature has always done a pretty good job of keeping things balanced. Then, along came humans…
Dogs are their primary victims. I know lots of people like the various breeds, like pugs and bulldogs, but the truth it, they’re being bred into helplessness. We’re exaggerating traits for aesthetic effects (and frequently inbreeding them in the process), and this is having a detrimental effect on their health and well-being. Wanna see the worst of them?

Of course, cats have suffered from our tampering too…
ugly inbred tiger cat

Don’t get me started on those short-legged cats they’ve been breeding… Animals are beautiful the way they are. A little selective breeding is fine (great, even!) but when it causes health problems and other detrimental side effects? I disagree with that path.

Oh yes, and cats rule, dogs drool. ;)

…at detecting cancer, studies suggest.

Cancer-Detecting Dog Trials Approved By The NHS

Studies are suggesting that dogs may be better at detecting cancer than many of the tests we use to screen patients, so now the National Health Service in the UK has authorized dogs to be used in trials to detect prostate cancer.

Ruh-roh!

Humanity is always trying to advance, and it seems like more and more, advancement is only coming when we realize that nature is already doing – and doing well! – what we’re trying to do. We study birds and insects to make better flying machines. And now we’re using animals themselves in medical tests to detect an illness.

I think this is amazing progress. After all, why reinvent the wheel? Additionally, studies have also shown that being around animals can aid healing regardless.

Check out the article for more of the scientific details – as always, IFLS does a wonderful job of breaking it down.

We Created Robots, Then Said, “Be Fruitful and Multiply”

IFLS: “Mother” Robot Builds Evolving Babies

The end is nigh: we have taught robots to create other robots, and not only that, but for each successive generation to be more efficient and effective than the last.

I am not the first to comment that teaching robots to not only build, but improve upon, themselves might not be the best idea. I seem to recall a line from I, Robot that also lamented this lack of foresight. The Stargate series also had robots called Replicators that could do this that frequently threatened to kill everything, everywhere.

stargate-replicator

But still, this is really cool. Maybe we can learn more about intelligent evolution and how to better design and breed things. And of course, it will save us time and energy if we can work alongside machines to the same end.

Providing it’s the same end, and they don’t decide we’re taking up too much space and resources and start a robot apocalypse.

But this is just a first step. The assembly-line “Mama” robot is given a few pieces and creates her “babies” with those pieces. Then “she” watches them walk down the table. “Better” babies are able to walk further, faster. After 10 generations of babies, there is a distinct improvement in their efficiency.

Meet the instrument of our demise:

Getting engaged makes you start thinking about where your life is going. What will you do, further down the road? Where will you work? Where will you live? What are your goals? It’s an opportunity to plan, but also to dream. It’s difficult to guess what the future will hold. Scientific advances are changing life as we know it faster than ever before.

For example, come 2020-ish, we might be able to live in a windmill. Popular Science wrote an article on new Dutch Windwheels. Wind-generated energy is highly desirable as a renewable resource, but building huge, noisy turbines in densely-populated areas is a tough sell. But the new windwheels that they’re developing look cool and futuristic and can simultaneously generate energy and provide habitable spaces for residential or commercial needs.

futuristic wind energy building

This is badass. I would live in this.

So when they build these, we might have to move to the Netherlands. Y’know, if we still feel like living inside a giant generator.

For more details, check out the article linked above.

What do you think, readers? Awesome or what? What other cool buildings and/or methods of harvesting energy are we likely to see in the future?

What Ray Guns And Cats Have In Common

IFLS just did an article on some new, science fiction-y technology headed out way. Some scientists have invented a “small handheld ultrasonic emitter that accelerates tissue repair…healing times could be reduced by 30%. This both increases comfort for the patient and shortens how long the wound is susceptible to infection.”

ray gun healing medical technology

Probably not what it looks like.

This is way cool. IFLS compares the invention to Star Trek’s medical ray gun, although of course that instrument provides instantaneous healing (methinks we’re a ways off from that yet). Essentially, this device reinvigorates cells and “jump starts” the healing process. As the article explains, “[t]he ultrasound device works by inducing nano-vibrations in the membranes and surrounding environments of skin cells.” The scientists are very optimistic about various uses for ultrasound technology in the future.

There was an interesting tie-in when IFLS asked (and partially answered) Why Do Cats Purr?

“Vibrations in the body have been shown to promote healing.

This raises the fascinating possibility that purring is actually a way for cats to heal themselves. While ultrasound has been shown to accelerate skin healing, and high frequency vibration training increases muscle power, some suggest that a cat’s purring can help to increase its bone density. This would fit the idea that athletes have denser bones on average as a result of vibrations when their feet hit the floor during exercise.

With such sedentary life styles, it might actually make sense that cats would need to increase healing and bone density while effectively lounging around for most of the day. It would also explain why cats purr when sick or injured.”

So it looks like cats are one step ahead of us. Also, apparently purring is a superpower. It would certainly be an interesting superpower. Someone needs to write this superpower into a book! Wait! I know a writer!

And, just because, here’s a nine hour video of a cat purring:

For your health! You’re welcome.

We Can’t Cure Cancer, But Can We Cure Old Age?

Almost a year ago, I wrote a post called The Blood Countess was right… sort of. It was spurred by news of the scientific discovery that young blood injected into older mice had rejuvenating effects on the old mice. Well, this research is still going on.

IFLS reports that Blocking “Pro-Aging” Molecule Could Reverse Memory Loss.

It would be interesting if transplanting young blood ever became reality for humans. In fact, it sounds like a good premise for a dystopic novel. There’s already a shortage of donated blood in hospitals. What if blood also became a luxury commodity? I can imagine a black market for blood. People could be kidnapped and/or killed for their blood. But maybe then there might be blood “donor” clinics where you could be paid for your blood. Certain lucky people of rare blood types might get paid more than people of more common blood types. If anyone wants to use this idea, go for it (although I wouldn’t mind a shout out. ;)

blood cells science youth aging reversal

I am excited about this as a scientific advancement though. I’m all for reducing the awfulness of aging. Prolonging life indefinitely would obviously have some severe consequences as well (not the least of which would be overpopulation), but if lifespans were around the same length but with less suffering? That sounds amazing.

What do you think, readers?

Break Out The Tin Foil Hats

Elon Musk Wants To Launch 4,000 Satellites That Will Provide Internet From Space

Alternative title: Elon Musk Wants To Launch 4,000 Satellites To Control Your Every Move.

That’s right people: mind control. 4,000 inescapable satellites sounds like enough firepower to get a start on that.

Just kidding. It’s really the aliens that will brainwash us to become their slaves.

I'm not saying it was aliens... but it was aliens.

In all seriousness, I’m stoked about Musk’s project. There have been other people/companies with ridiculous amounts of money that have tackled this in the past, and there are numerous financial and logistical obstacles in the way yet, but I think this is a step in the right direction.

Musk seems to be looking to tackle the financial problems first – their satellites are less expensive that those of previous attempts. Size and material costs have been minimized, so hopefully his project gets a little traction, at least. Internet anywhere? Yes, please.

What do you think, readers? Are you excited, or do you think there are too many obstacles to have even a hope of succeeding?

Living Concrete

Have you ever noticed how things built today don’t seem to last like things built “yesterday?” Seriously, look at some of the structures built in ancient times: Stonehenge comes to mind, as well as the Coliseum in Rome and castles across Europe. Then you look at buildings today and how quickly they seem to deteriorate. True, we’re trying to build faster and cheaper, trying to be more efficient with our resources. Maybe the things we’re building don’t need to last that long.

But maybe we’re just waiting for the technology we need to come along. Like self-healing concrete. IFLS wrote an article called Self-Healing Concrete Repairs Its Own Cracks.

A brilliant microbiologist came up with the idea of having a particular kind of bacteria encapsulated inside concrete used for building. When the concrete grows old and cracks, moisture creeps in and releases the bacteria. The bacteria then revive. When the bacteria eat the “food” encapsulated with them, they produce limestone to fill the cracks in the concrete.

Voila, self-healing concrete.

No more navigating this minefield to avoid "breaking your mother's back."

No more navigating this minefield to avoid “breaking your mother’s back.”

Even cooler, these bacteria can lie dormant for centuries until needed. Now there’s an insurance policy that’ll keep you covered.

For more details, check out IFLS’s article above. The technology is a little expensive right now, but scientists are seeking to develop cheaper options without compromising the effectiveness.

Future concrete: it’s alive!

What do you think, readers? Is this cool or what?
